Risk prevention

Since 1900, human activities have increased the concentration of greenhouse gases in the atmosphere. These gases increase the temperature on Earth. The most famous are:

  • Oxygen dioxide (CO²): transport, heating, etc.

  • Methane (CH4): expansion of rice cultivation and cattle breeding

  • Nitrous oxide (N20): massive use of chemical fertilizers

  • Chlorofluorocarbons (CFCs): banned since 2010.

The last few years have been the warmest on record on a global scale since the start of the surveys, with an increase of 1.1 to 1.2 degrees compared to the pre-industrial years (1880-1900). This warming affects atmospheric movements and sea currents, which can themselves be the cause of major meteorological phenomena. Thus, in recent years we have been facing more and more extreme phenomena such as fires, floods or severe storms. The IPCC publishes reports showing an increasingly critical situation. For now, if nothing is changed, scientists estimate an increase of 5.7°C. They also believe that the temperature should not reach the critical threshold of 2 °C. For example, the rise in temperature to +3 degrees Celsius can cause:

  • 152,000 annual deaths in 2100 in Europe linked to climate change disasters

  • An increase in the volume of intense rains which could rise up to 20% by 2100 in southern Europe

  • An increase in exceptional floods (every 10 years from 2050)

  • An increase of 1 meter in the level of the oceans by 2100 which will engender the submersion of several cities such as Bordeaux or Amsterdam. (U.S National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) Report 2017)

  • Intense winters in western Europe due to the weakening of the Gulf Stream.

  • An increase in climate refugees due to an explosion in health problems, poverty and food prices linked to climate change

  • A decrease of the biodiversity, already visible today. Since the 1970's, the Earth has lost 60% of its populations of wild animals, as informed by WWF in its last report submitted in 2018.

It is therefore more than necessary to find solutions to fight against global warming and the disappearance of biodiversity. Companies and research laboratories are thus developing new technologies to protect territories as well as to alert and avoid extreme phenomena (radars, drones, etc.). They are also looking for solutions to limit greenhouse gas emissions.

Monachus Project

Thanks to the joint initiative of various public and private entities, and the technological development of bird monitoring transmitters, the reintroduction of a bird that disappeared more than 100 years ago: the black vulture (Aegypius monachus). The main objective is to return to the Pyrenean massif a key species for the functioning of agrosilvopastoral ecosystems. Generating, in addition, an ecological bridge between the main European colonies of black vultures, located in the SW of Spain, and the incipient nuclei that have been emerging in France through similar projects

One of the areas of research is looking for new uses for algae off the Portuguese coast, namely in the areas of health and food. ESTM researchers have developed, for example, a bread with salt substitute algae, a product that is expected to start being marketed by a bakery next year. They have another project called Smart Ocean, which aims work collaboratively for a future in which we can benefit more and more from the oceans, while contributing to its sustainability.
